About this deal

My only point is that when you are braking from high speed, upright bars require you to use hand strength to maintain your position as you decelerate since your palm is moving along the bar, not being pushed into it.

I have the feeling, that with a curved handlebar my hands are in a much more natural position and I surly don't have to "look up" as I do on my tour bike. About a year ago I converted my 82 Schwinn World Sport Road Bike with these VO Postino Bars and love them. Today, you can find Dutch bikes made from aluminium to reduce their weight, as well as options for gearing. I have used handlebars that are comfortable for me for daily commuting and city riding for over 65 years, been comfortable for day trips of over 100 miles too. Better yet, many Dutch bicycles feature a step-through frame that allows you to swing a leg over no matter how formal your work clothes are.Moustache bars can offer similar hand positions while leaving the braking in a well-supported position for faster riding.

I did consider bars like what you described, but I went with what has been working for me on the other two bikes. No matter what modern adaptations you need to your traditional urban bike, wehave a Dutch-inspired ride for you. The curved handlebars offer a comfortable grip and allow you to ride in a more upright and relaxed position, the saddle is wide and has thick padding. Instead of the lateral dynamo of today, a hub dynamo usually operates the lighting system, but this concession to modern technology is a welcome one. It's good for a low position, but makes it difficult to achieve a comfortable position for utility usage. These have a width of 525 mm and a stem height which is quoted as 300 mm but which I measure as 280 mm.

You'd think the bike brands would at least try to sell a bike in US that other countries have used for years but guess can't find right marketing name to push. For most utility bike usage, the most convenient handlebar shapes are the "North Road" shape as used on traditional British bikes, or the "parallel" shape also used in the Netherlands. I've happy with my new Raleigh Venture and it's comfortable for the short trips I take, but I can see how the flat bar and palm grips might cause or aggravate hand/wrist pain if I ever start riding longer distances or develop arthritis, carpal tunnel etc.A pair of traditional Dutch style parallel handlebars, of chromed steel, with quill style handlebar stem.
