Mevagissey lies on the South Coast of Mid-Cornwall at the tip of the beautiful
and peaceful Roseland Peninsula.....
It is ideally situated to cover all areas of Cornwall as day trips by car, or, if you
prefer to stay close at hand, Mevagissey itself has lots to offer its visitors......
The harbour is of course a fascinating place to sit and while away the day, there is always lots going on, the antics of the local fisherman, the wildlife and of course the visitors! ....... or, if you prefer to take to the seas yourself, there are plenty of boat trips to take, either to do a little sight seeing of the local coastline or to try your luck at a spot of fishing......
Mevagissey has its own beach, Polstreath, which is accessible from the coastal path leading towards the village of Pentewan, or just to walk along the coastal path with its stunning views is a pleasure in itself.......There is also the aquarium, recently refurbished, which is situated on the harbour going out towards the lighthouse. It is said to be 'possibly the smallest aquarium in the world', but features many species of fish found in these waters. There is also the World of Model Railways, with one of the best model shops in the South-West of England. The OO gauge exhibition layout, has over 30 trains travelling through varied landscapes including town, country, seaside and even an Alpine Winter, so is well worth a visit.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan is of course a must and there is a lovely walk up through the woods to the gardens, which will take you about 40 minutes, or just a couple of minutes if you prefer to drive. Incase you have missed out on hearing of the gardens, the brief history is this......they were buried for more than 70 years, beneath a tangle of overgrown ivy, brambles, laurel and fallen timber, but, today, 16 years after work commenced; around 200 acres of garden have been rediscovered and restored to their former Victorian glory, fuelled by the dedication and vision of John Nelson, Tim Smit and their enthusiastic workers. The gardens are classified as one of the great archaeological discoveries of horticulture.

The Eden Project is also a must do with the majority of our guests. It will take you around 20 minutes to drive there, or if you prefer to use public transport, you can catch the bus from the village into St Austell, where you will be able to hop onto the shuttle bus to Eden.....There are always lots of events going on at Eden, so if you go to our link page you will be able to check out, what's what before your visit.

If you are lucky enough to be in Mevagissey during Feast Week, this year if falls week beginning June 28th, you are in for a real treat of Cornish Tradition.....
The celebrations are based on religion and St. Peters Day, who is the patron saint of Fisherman.....a celebration of the blessing of the fish.
The village is decked with lights and flags and the weeks events include various evening activities, such as the Mevagissey Male Voice Choir, the floral dance, which takes place through the village streets, various water activities, a funfair and a grand carnival and spectacular firework display from the harbour on the last day.....

For those visitors contemplating a winter break, a little secret tip....
if you see a forecast of high pressure over Cornwall come on down, Cornwall can be a golden jewel in winter.....no traffic hold-ups, the sea views are breathtaking, Eden and Heligan are quiet, but no less magnificent and there are close season bargains to be had in the local restaurants.
Our winters to, are, generally much milder than the rest of the country and for the majority of time, a thick woolly jumper, hat, scarf and gloves are all you need......
New Year in Mevagissey is also rather special, with everyone in fancy dress and celebrations continue until the early hours. As with Feast Week, there is a spectacular firework display set to music from the harbour and the village and harbour are decked with lights and decorations, which incidentally, are there throughout the Christmas period. Book early to avoid disappointment!

Places to Eat
In Mevagissey

Eating out and drinking in Mevagissey are real treats.....
There are six pubs and six restaurants in the village - all of a very high quality,
each offering something different in terms of flavour and character.
If you are here long enough, you will not be disappointed in trying them all.
Real ale buffs, will appreciate the Tribute, Tinners and HSD ales from St Austell Brewery......
but, extreme care needs to be taken with the latter which is also know as
'high speed diesel - I speak from bitter experience!

On the restaurant front, Mary and I must confess to having a personal favourite.
We simply love The Salamander Restaurant, which is just 80 metres down our own
Tregony Hill.
Owners, Mark and Hazel have devised a fascinating and succulent menu,
which majors not only on a tasty variety of locally caught fish, but,
also on locally produced meat from Lobbs Farm, at the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
The Salamander has no ostentatious pretensions - it just has a homely, personal feel,
the service is excellent and the food melts on the palate.
It is simply a must!!
Booking in advance is advisable, particularly at weekends
when the locals are out and about.
