o The PEG will not be used for the first 6 hours after the procedure. You will also have to remain nil by mouth for 6 hours after the procedure. The “When” in PEG replacement encompasses when it is safe to replace a PEG tube after initial placement and also how long an existing tube will function before deterioration resulting in malfunction occurs. After initial placement the PEG stoma tract begins to mature in 1-2 weeks and is usually well-formed in 4 weeks (Figure 1,2). This process may take longer in patients with impaired wound healing (ascites, malnutrition, immunosuppressive medications or states, diabetes, obesity). Therefore, PEG replacement after initial placement can be safely performed as soon as 4-6 weeks in most patients. It may need to be longer (up to 3 months) in higher risk patients as described above. 5 If a tube is inadvertently removed or has a complication requiring replacement before stoma tract maturation, confirmation of correct placement with one of the methods explained later in this article in the “How” of PEG placement is mandatory. 3 For example, although a man may usually stand to urinate, if you are unstable, you may find that sitting is a safer, easier option. It also means that you do not need to worry about holding items of clothing whilst using the toilet. o After 6 hours the tube will be flushed with 50mls of sterile water. If your PEG is required for feed or medication, these can be given via the PEG the following morning but not before.

What to expect If you have difficulty managing or holding layers of clothing when you go to the toilet, consider alternative ways of temporarily securing your clothes. There is equipment for this (for example a Pants aid) but you may find it easier to sew discrete loops and buttons to hold layers out of the way
This consists of two plastic clips joined with a piece of elastic. One clip is attached to your top, the other to your trousers before you lower trousers to go to the toilet. This helps keep trousers within reach when you stand after using the toilet.When it’s time for your procedure, you will be brought into the procedure room and helped onto an exam table. You will be attached to equipment to monitor your heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. You will also receive oxygen through your nose. Your nurse will place a mouth guard over your teeth to protect them. Otherwise, you must go to your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) department for them to maintain the opening. You will receive further supplies from your community health care team, your local paediatric community nurse (if your area has one), your dietitian or your GP. If you have any problems getting hold of further supplies once you are at home, please ring the hospital.
This is for the individual who is ambulatory and feels the long PEG tube is socially inconvenient (not to be confused with Replacement balloon PEG which also has got a balloon as a retaining device) Vent’ (or remove wind) in the way you have been shown. Usually, one or two nights’ stay in hospital is needed, depending on how well you get used to feeding through the device. The doctors will have explained which type of GJ device they are planning to use when they are talking to you before the operation. If you have reduced, or no sensation in your lower body, and you are immobile in the chair much of the time, you must be aware of how the clothing you wear affects your skin condition.
